How to Clean and Store Your Kitchen Knives

They slice, chop, and mince. Knives are the quiet heroes of every kitchen and are constantly in use. With proper care and cleanliness, they not only stay sharp and efficient but also stand the test of time. It may seem simple, yet a little attention makes all the difference in your everyday cooking.

Follow the tips below to properly care for both the blade and the handle, from washing and drying to storage and choosing the right cutting surface. Sharpening is also a key part of maintenance, so make sure to keep your blade sharp.

Remember. The most important thing is to always handle knives safely. Clean them carefully to avoid accidents or injuries.

Blade Cleaning

The best way to clean a knife is to rinse it immediately after use. Hold it under running cold water and gently rub the blade with your fingers, avoiding the sharp edge. You can use a clean cloth or sponge to prevent scratching the metal.

Salty or acidic foods can stain the blade if left for too long, so clean it as soon as possible.

In most cases, water alone is enough, especially if the blade is stainless steel and well polished. For greasy foods, use a small amount of dish soap on a sponge. Keep the knife parallel to the sink so you can clearly see the blade and maintain better control while washing.

Dishwasher Use

Knives with synthetic handles are generally dishwasher safe. However, we recommend washing all large knives by hand, regardless of handle type.

If not placed correctly, they can cause damage to the dishwasher rack or even lead to blade corrosion. Hand washing is also gentler and helps maintain sharpness for a longer time.

If you choose to use the dishwasher, rinse the blade first and make sure it does not touch other metal utensils. Use a mild detergent and avoid excessive amounts. If you notice stains or reduced cleaning performance, try switching detergents. After the cycle, open the dishwasher door to allow moisture to evaporate and prevent corrosion.

Drying the Blade

Do not let knives air dry, as this can cause mineral spots. Dry them immediately with a clean cotton or linen towel, taking care to avoid scratches.

Caring for Knives with Wooden Handles

Wooden handles require special care and should never be washed in the dishwasher. Try to keep them as dry as possible and clean them with a damp cloth.

Avoid exposing them to high temperatures, excessive moisture, or harsh cleaning agents. Occasionally, apply a thin layer of cold pressed linseed oil or rapeseed oil to preserve the texture and natural color of the wood.

Cutting Surfaces. What to Choose

The right cutting surface affects the lifespan of the blade. Avoid hard surfaces such as stone or marble, which dull knives quickly. Choose wooden or plastic cutting boards designed to be gentle on blades.

Tip. When transferring ingredients from the cutting board to a pot or pan, use the back of the knife instead of the sharp edge to avoid dulling it.

Storage

The golden rule is never store knives loose in a drawer. When unprotected blades rub against each other, they lose sharpness and the edge can be damaged by contact with other blades.

We recommend storing your knives in a block, with blade guards inside a drawer, or on a wall mounted magnetic strip, so they remain sharp and safe.
